About Settlano
A tax app for Malta’s self-employed, built in Malta
Settlano keeps a running answer to one question: of the money you have been paid, how much is actually yours once income tax, Class 2 social security and VAT are set aside? It is built in Malta by one person, for freelancers, sole traders and anyone earning on the side of a day job.
What it does
- Log income in seconds, and see at once what part of it is yours to spend and what to set aside.
- Every Maltese deadline, dated: provisional tax, Class 2, VAT returns and the annual return, on one timeline.
- Books: income, expenses with receipt scanning, and invoices under Cap. 406 that log their own income.
- The accountant pack: a profit and loss, the registers and a VAT summary as one PDF, so the year arrives reconciled.
Settlano works out planning estimates. It does not file anything, and it is not tax, legal or accounting advice. The honest split of the work with an accountant is on its own page.
How the figures are checked
Every rate, band, threshold and date lives in one dated rules file, and each one is linked to its source at the Malta Tax and Customs Administration or on legislation.mt. Every guide on this site shows the tax year and the date its rules were verified, and lists its figures with those links.
The calculators on this site run the app’s own engine, compiled to run in your browser, so the website and the app cannot disagree. The engine is covered by thousands of automated tests, many of them worked out by hand from the published rules before the code was written.
The limits are stated, not hidden. Where a rule needs judgement, the app says so and points to your accountant or the MTCA. You can check any Malta tax calculator, this one included, in about a minute.
What stays private
Your books live on your phone. There is no Settlano account, no bank connection and no tracking, and nothing you log is sent to anyone. The one thing the app can fetch, only if you switch it on, is the European Central Bank’s public exchange rates. The privacy policy sets out the detail.
Where it is now
Settlano is on iPhone, in a free beta by invite through TestFlight, with the App Store launch to follow. Android comes next. At launch it is one subscription: the prices are on the home page.
